The Books We Say We’ve Read

From: March 6th, 2009

Have you ever lied about reading a book? Well, if so, you’re hardly alone. According to The Guardian, 65% of people polled in a survey admitted to having made such a lie. And what books did they claim to have read? George Orwell’s 1984 ranked #1. Then the order went something like this: Tolstoy’s War and Peace, James Joyce’s Ulysses, and the Bible.

I was reminded today that 1984 was first published 60 years ago. You can get the 60th anniversary edition here, or you can always download a free, high quality audio book from And, for more free audio books, visit our large collection.

Why would people lie about reading 1984? (A: They had to read it in their highschool English class. Nothing like pressure to ruin a book.) But, really, it's written to be user friendly, and it's important and absorbing. Easier to read than a comic book for me - I've read it at least three times.
Read Ulysses and loved it 'cause it was my dawn respite from a crumbling marriage -out under the seagulls who were patrolling the Atlantic shore (the snotgreen sea). Reading it once was like reading it at least twice.
Lying about what books you've read - hmmm. Kind of like locker-room lies about the success of your hot date. How fucking empty and sad.

When Books Fly...

Agreed...very sad... I read the bible for 40 days and 40 nights... (hahaha..kidding...)
